Caretta - Turkish Caravan Manufacturer

Caretta Caravans

Background

Caretta Caravans are manufactured by the Turkish company Başoğlu. They started producing caravans in 1976 in Sakarya, northwest Turkey. In 2008, Başoğlu launched the Caretta brand as a lightweight caravan line. Their export market now covers more than 45 countries, with a strong focus on Western Europe. All caravans are handbuilt at their factory in Sakarya.

Construction

Most models use an AL-KO chassis with a body made from marine board, an outer GRP layer, and insulation in between. Built to withstand extreme temperatures. Caravans are designed to travel at speeds up to 120 km/h with minimal load on the towing vehicle.

Pros

  • Very lightweight and easy to tow. Most models can be hitched to almost any car without a special licence.
  • Low insurance costs and, in many countries, no annual technical inspection required for lighter models.
  • Owners report minimal impact on fuel consumption.
  • Generally praised for better build quality and materials than comparable caravans in this segment.
  • The Off Road model features independent suspension and protective perimeter piping for rough terrain use.

Cons

  • At least one reviewer questioned the durability of the Off Road body casing in rough terrain.
  • Not cheap for the size. The AL-KO chassis adds to the price.
  • Limited living space. Suits minimalist travellers, not full-comfort touring.
  • Floorplan layouts are similar to many other European caravans in this category.
